Dr Sue Gordon AM
My goals for Aboriginal youth across Australia are the same goals I had for my two sons growing up in the Pilbara in the period 1974-1986 before we moved back to Perth where they commmenced their university studies. That is, they can make choices on whatever career path they want to take. The difference now is that since 1994, instead of depending solely on family, Aboriginal students know they can use The Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation as a leading agency offering support in the form of enrichment centres and career discussion.
In addition to those Aboriginal families who are or were able to send their children to private school, all Aboriginal youth now have the option to remain with family, get the assistance needed and stay in their country. This is thanks to Graham and Marlene Farmer who although initally reluctant, agreed to let Steve Hawke write Graham's biography on the condition that the Foundation be established. Graham was, and still is, a man of vision who wanted to see his prowess on the football field translanted into action for young Aboriginal people. Like Graham, I have all the usual desires and aspirations to see Aboriginal youth stand tall on equal footing with all other Australian youth.
I have seen Aboriginal youth commence apprenticeships as far back as the mid 1970s and seen them become tradesmen against all odds. I now have 'grannies' who have completed apprenticeships and it still leaves me with a great emotional pride to see them reach their own personal goals. |
I have been associated with the Foundation as a Patron for many years and what has been achieved is in no small way the results of a dedicated, hardworking Foundation which just gets on with it and makes it happen in most parts of Australia.
I am personally proud of the work of the Foundation and, having grown up with Graham (Polly) Farmer at Sister Kate's Home in Queens Park, Western Australia, am privileged to have shared patronage with the man that started it all. Dr Sue Gordon President |
