Port Augusta Partnership for Success

The Newman Aboriginal Education Partnership (NAEP) is a partnership between The Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation, the Western Australian Department of Education and Training, the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and local community members.

Project Background
Prior to the commencement of the project a consultation process was undertaken with the local community and possible industry and government sponsors. These consultations took place at the invitation of the local community. With the support of the Government of South Australia and the private sponsors the project commenced late 2006.

STEERING COMMITTEE
A Steering Committee oversees the project and provides strategic level management. The Steering Committee includes representatives from all Partnership organisations:

  • The Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation
  • The Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
  • The South Australian Department of Education and Children’s Services
  • NRG Flinders
  • EDI – Rail Division
  • Desert Knowledge CRC
  • Genesee & Wyoming
  • BHP Billiton Base Metals
  • ETSA
  • Community members

STUDENTS AND THEIR ENRICHMENT CENTRE
The Partnership operates from facilities supplied by the Government of SA which includes study, tutoring, internet and kitchen facilities. Students attend for a minimum of two and maximum of four afternoons per week. Enrichment and extension activities occur during some weekends and holiday periods. All students have an Individual Learning Plan and associated personal tutors.

There are 32 students. Since its inception in 2007 the Partnership has graduated 8 students, 3 of whom have gained Tertiary Entrance, 5 of whom have gained traineeships/apprenticeships or entry to TAFE and 1 to direct employment.
